Changing Room Gallery

We are proud to present our BAFA graduate showcase at Changing Room Gallery from the 29th to the 31st July 2021. Traces: A mark, object, or other indication of the existence or passing of something. Although varied in medium and style, the underlying themes that drew the works together arose from a certain disembodiment, perhaps attributable to the loss of physicality that we have all been subjugated to over the past 18 months. Following this period, where tangible corporeality was largely encoded through digitisation (simulations replaced physical experience, posing as its facsimile) The parity between the artworks and the state of transit is made clear by the immediate environment. Occupying repossessed offices in London’s cultural epicentre, one is reminded of impermanence. Through the windows, light streams in from neon advertising boards. At night they bathe the rooms in sickly purples and yellows. Moving between spaces, one is faced with traces of a previously bustling office: Grease from handprints stain the walls, scuffed eviction notices remain in their place. The show defies any illusive or persuasive qualities: nothing has been erased – every history is left visible.
